Fabrication

Fillingham and Company works with artists and other clients to oversee and creatively direct the fabrication or artworks, bringing a technical and artistic engagement with materials to any project.

Over many years, Peter Fillingham has established a role as artistic director on many unique projects.

As a young artist in the 1990’s he worked on several projects and exhibitions with Derek Jarman and the curator Peter Lewis. These experiences led to him developing a curatorial practice, working very closely with other artists regarding the fabrication, display and installation of their work, a practice that grew in parallel to his own art practice and teaching career.

In 2012, he began working with the artist Rasheed Araeen. Initially working with him to fabricate wooden sculptures, this work has evolved into a creative association that has spanned fabrication in many materials, forms and contexts. A large part of this work is coordinated from Hastings and St Leonards where specialist timber is sourced and milled, specialist fabricators are employed to deal with fibreglass, steel, aluminium, powder-coating and printmaking.

Two major large scale works fabricated entirely in Hastings under Peter Fillingham’s direction recently include Zero to Infinity made for the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, and Rhapsody in four colours, a 35-metre-high permanent installation made for the Aga Khan Centre as part of The King’s Cross Project, curated by Tamsin Dillon and Rebecca Heald in 2018.
